East Bergholt Circular via Flatford Mill

This cycle ride is approximately 13 mileslong and takes you from the picturesque village of East Bergholt out into the Suffolk countryside, home of the famous 18th century painter John Constable and his paintings of Flatford Mill. On route you have the option of taking a small diversion to Flatford Mill to see the famous site of the paintings. Route is all tarmac on country lanes and ‘B’ roads.

Flatford Mill

Starting from the Carriers Arms on the Gaston End B1070 near the centre of East Bergholt cycle to your LEFT for about 80 yards and then TURN LEFT along Gaston Street.

Cycle along Garston Street and after about 500 yards it changes its name to The Street. Carry on along the Street and follow it around the left hand bend passing The Red Lion on your right. After about 200 yards you come to the end of The Street and here you TURN LEFT along Rectory Hill.

Continue along Rectory Hill for about 500 yards and you will come to a cross roads. NOTE:- If you where to turn right here down Flatford Road you would come to The national Trust property at Flatford Mill after about half a mile. We think its well worth a visit, there are some riverside paths to explore and we enjoyed the small river cruise operated by local volunteers, not to mention the National Trust property and café.

To continue the ride…. At the cross roads continue STRAIGHT ACROSS the junction along
White Horse Road. After about 400 yards you come to a ‘T’ junction TURN LEFT along Mill road B1070.

After about 350 yards you come to a cross roads TURN RIGHT onto East End Road towards the village of East End. After about half a mile you come to the village of East End and a’T’ junction at this junction TURN LEFT along a country lane towards the village of Bentley.

After a few hundred yards you will pass Bentley Riding School on the left at the end a wooded area, as the lane bends sharply to the right you TURN LEFT towards Bentley, which is just 400 yards away.
On reaching Bentley you come to another ‘T’ junction TURN LEFT along Bentley Road towards the large village of Capel ST Mary. Continue along Bentley Road for about half a mile where you come to its end. Here you BEAR RIGHT which takes you to a small roundabout.

At the roundabout GO LEFT along The Street which takes into the centre of Capel St Mary.

Follow The Street all the way through the village and at the other end of the village it changes its name to Mill Hill continue along as it twists and turns for a few hundred yards and then comes to a ‘T’ junction. At the junction TURN LEFT along Brook Lane.

After about 500 yards you come to a ‘T’ junction at this junction TURN Right and then after 300 yards TURN SECOND LEFT along a country lane and follow it for about a half a mile to its end.

At the ‘T’ junction at its end TURN LEFT along Woodlands Road which takes you towards the village of Raydon. As you approach the village of Raydon the road changes its name to The Street B1070.

Continue along this road through the village and the road twists and turns for about a mile and then passes through the village of Holton St Mary before passing over the A12 and then onto East bergholt after approximately half a mile. As you reach the centre of the village the road bears left and you come back to The Carriers Arms. The start/finish of your ride.
