Bardney to Woodhall Spa National Cycle Route No 1 The Water Rail Way

A flat 7 mile cycle route¬†which is mainly along a traffic free trail ‘The Water Rail Way Trail’ with some short distances cycling along ‘B’ roads and country lanes. An ideal route for families or a quiet leisure cycle ride.

Starting from The Nags Head pub in the centre of Bardney cycle right along Horncastle road towards Bucknall. Cycle along the road for about one and a half miles where you come to Southrey Wood on your right. Cycle along the side of the woods and at the end of the woods TURN RIGHT down Ferry Road.

Continue for about one and a half miles to the end of Ferry Road passing through the village of Southrey then the road brings you to a trail at the side of the River Witham. TURN LEFT along the river side path heading in the direction of Langrick and Boston. You are now cycling along The Water Rail Way Trail which takes you towards Woodhall Spa. As you cycle along The Water Rail Way Trail you cycle along the River Witham which for centuries was the main route for transport carrying grain and wool etc. between Lincoln and Boston.

Continue along the Water Rail Path for about five and a half miles where you come to a
bridge across the river. At the bridge TURN LEFT off the trail and cycle along Witham Road B1191 for three quarters of a mile to the centre of Woodhall Spa. The end of your cycle ride.
At Woodhall Spa you will find The Cottage Museum, several nearby nature reserves and the remains of Kirksreatd Abbey are close to the village.
