Alnwick to Northumberland Country Park Circular - 34 miles

This route will take you along tarmac country lanes. You will
encounter some hills on this route. Route is mainly along rural lanes. Taking you from the market town of Alnwick out through some of The Northumberland Country Park. You will pass through some remote villages on this route, no main towns until you return to Alnwick.

Approx 34 miles. Hilly in places.

Alnwick is a small market town and famous for its castle, where they use the castle as Hogwarts in Harry Potter films and is the home of The Earl of Northumberland. Alnwick also boasts Alnwick Gardens which is adjacent to the castle and open to the public.

Starting from The Market Place in Alnwick cycle along Clayport St B6341 out of Alnwick towards the village of Edlingham approx 5 miles. Continue on the B6341 through the village of Edlingham and you will by now be cycling along country lanes through some rolling hills which will lead you towards Northumberland Country Park.

After cycling along the B6341 for about another 6 miles you will come the village of

Rothbury. At Rothbury you continue along the B6341 to Thropton. (Note: – at the village Rothbury if you take the B6344 towards Weldon you will come to National Trust Property of Cragside. The first property in the world to have electricity and owned built and owned by William Armstrong who was also responsible for the restoration of Bamborough castle. Cragside is only about three quarters of a mile south east of Rothbury)

As you enter the village of Thropton you will come to a pub The Cross Keys. At The Cross Keys you need to turn right up the lane which leads to the villages of Cartington, Lorbottle and Callaly. Cartington boasts its own castle which apparently dates back to 1154.

As you reach Callaly you turn right up a small lane which takes you to the village of Whittingham. As you enter Whittingham you will be on Callaly Rd continue to the end of the road where you will come to a ‘T’ junction. Turn right at the ‘T’ junction and then left after about 500 yards. After about half a mile you will reach a cross road junction with the A697. Go straight across the junction along Garmintedge Bank.

Cycle to the end of Garmintedge Bank, about 2 miles and you will come to a junction with theB6341.

Turn left along the B6341 to Alnwick. Follow the B6341 for about 3 miles and it will take you back to the start/finish of your ride at The Market Place in Alnwick.
