Penrith to Ambleside

Penrith to Ambleside via kirkstone pass – 23 miles

Only reccomended for the advanced/fool hardy rider. This ride takes you from the market town of Penrith to Ambleside via The Kirkstone Pass which is a serious climb.

Starting from Ullswater Road, A592  near the centre of Penrith cycle away from the town centre along Ullswater Road and cycle to the second roendabout where you take THE THIRD EXIT along the A66 heading in the direction of Keswick.
cycle along the A66 for 1 mile then TURN LEFT along the
A592 towards Ullswater.
Continue along the A592 past Ullswater on your left and through the villages of Glenridding, Patterdale,  and Hartsop. Continue along the A592 and you will start to climb up a long hill, The Kirkstone Pass. Approximatley three and a half miles past Hartsop TURN RIGHT and cycle up the Kirkstone Pass. On Kirkstone Pass section of the ride you will experience a severe climb.


After reaching the top (where you will find a pub, The Kirkstone Pass Inn, should you wish
to take a break) you then continue along the road down towards Ambleside. On this section you will encounter a severe descent so take care as you cycle down hill.


Continue to the end of the road which is called Kirkstone Road as you enter Amble side and at the end of the road TURN LEFT along Rydal Road A591 and cycle the short distance to Ambleside, the end of the ride.

You will find various establishments for refreshments along the way.Stop and enjoy the view at the top of Kirkstone Pass. Only for the fittest of riders.
