Approximately 6 mile including return journey. This flat cycle ride along the seafront takes you from the seaside town of Eastbourne to the nearby new marina with its shops and café’s where you can enjoy the atmosphere of the cosmopolitan marina before your return journey back to Eastbourne. Tarmac surface and traffic free nearly all the way, with the exception of the suburbs around the marina.

Starting from The Tea Chalet on the junction of Chesterfield Road and Kings Edward’s Parade on the sea front. When you are looking out to sea cycle to your right with the sea on your left as you cycle along. After 150 yards TURN LEFT down the turning (quit steep) which takes you down past the café on your right and towards the sea front at the bottom of the slope. When you reach the bottom of the slope TURN LEFT almost like a hairpin bend and cycle along the water front with the sea on your right.

As you cycle along the flat route enjoying the sea air and views after about half a mile you pass Western lawns, an area where there are numerous events held throughout the season and then you cycle past the bandstand and then Eastbourne Pier which was built in 1870 and many years ago paddle steamers used to operate trips along the coast and ferries to Boulogne across the Channel.

Just under half a mile past Eastbourne Pier you pass Eastbourne Redoubt a fort on what is now Royal Parade. The fort was built between 1804 and 1810 to help defend against the threat of an invasion by Napoleon Continue past the fort and keep to the sea front and cycle past the tennis courts on your left.

Cycle along the sea front for another three quarters of a mile where you come to a building, pass the building on the right side, keeping to the sea front and at the end of the building turn left off the sea front by the small roundabout and in front of you come to another roundabout. At this point you will leave the traffic free section of the cycle ride.

At the roundabout GO STRAIGHT ACROSS along Atlantic drive and after 300 yards TURN RIGHT along Santa Cruz Drive and follow the road the short distance to the waters edge on the Marina. If you go round the marina to the right at this point it takes you to the Piazza area, or if you go round the Marina to the left and follow the waters edge it brings you to the main area of shops and café’s at the Marina. There are plenty of places where you can relax and enjoy some refreshments before your return journey back.
