An easy 3 mile cycle route which takes you from the small historic town of Rye to the nearby seaside town of Winchelsea. The route leaves Rye via the local roads and very quickly you find yourself cycling along a grassy trail down to the village of Winchelsea.

Rye is a small historic town with charm that makes it a tourist destination, and there are a number of hotels, guest houses, B&B’s, tea rooms and restaurants in the town for you to enjoy. The town has a small harbour and a castle which was built in 1249 and is now home to a museum.

Starting from The Ship Inn on Strand in Rye cycle left up Strand which runs on to Wish Ward and after 150 yards at the end of the road TURN LEFT on to Wish Street. After 100 yards at the end of Wish Street GO STRAIGHT AHEAD on to Winhelsea Road A259 and cycle over the canal and around the left hand bend in the road.

Follow the road for about 200 yards then TUTN LEFT along Harbour Road. Signposted for Rye Harbour. As soon as you cross the canal TURN RIGHT on to the bridlepath. At the next house fork left going through the gate . The trail then takes you along a raised grassy dyke.

When you come to the junction close to the concrete sheds keep to the right following the blue arrow sign. The trail gets a bit rougher on this section. Continue along the path and when you reach the sewage works you rejoin a tarmac road.

Cycle along the road and after about 400 yards the road bends to the right and takes you past some houses at this point the road is called Sea Road. About 500 yards after the bend you come to a ‘T’ junction. Note you can instead at the bend go straight n and the small road takes you half a mile down to Winchelsea Beach.

At the junction TURN LEFT and after 100 yards TURN LEFT up Strand Hill and as the name suggests you cycle up the hill and after a short distance Strand Hill runs on to High Street in the centre of Winchelsea. The end of your cycle ride. Winchelsea is a village near to the south coast however some people claim that Winchelsea is the smallest town in England…..
