Wimbledon Common Circular to The Wombles Ride

Wimbledon Common –‘ The Wombles Ride’ – 7 miles.

A cycle ride which takes you round the common and over into Richmond Park before returning via some roads and back on Wimbledon Common. You will find that most of the roads used have designated cycle paths. Surface of the ride can be rough in a few places but mainly on a tarmac surface.

Starting from Southside Common cycle north along The Green past Rushmere Pond on your left. The gravel path you are cycling along soon passes across Cannizaro Road and then meets with The Causeway. At the Causeway TURN LEFT.

After 100 yards follow Camp Road and then BEAR RIGHT along Sunset Road, go through the gate sign posted for The Thatched Cottage. As you approach Spring Cottage look out for the gate on your left marked for cyclists. When you see the gate follow the designated cycle route, and be aware that that this section of the ride is purely off road and bumpy in places as you cycle through the woodland.

After about half a mile you reach the end of the woodland and come out by Beverley Brook. At this point MAKE SURE YOU STAY ON THE NEAR SIDE OF THE WATER and TURN RIGHT which takes you past the playing fields. At the end TURN LEFT across the bridge and cross the footbridge over the A3 and use the crossing to go through Robin Hood Gate into Richmond Park.

Once in Richmond Park cycle straight ahead for about 400 yards then at the car park TURN LEFT ,with Pen Ponds on your left Cycle up the hill past The White Lodge, A Georgian House now part of The School for The Royal Ballet. About 400 yards past The White Lodge TURN RIGHT on to Sawyers Hill which takes you to Roehampton Gate. Go through the gate and TURN RIGHT on to Danebury Ave.

After half a mile you come to the end of Danebury Ave. At this point we recommend you dismount and cross STRAIGHT OVER THE A306 and cycle along Roehampton High Street. After 200 yards along Roehampton High Street TURN RIGHT on to Medfield Street where you join up with the cycle path that takes you to Putney Heath to the War Memorial. Just past Scio Pond the cycle path goes near to the A306 before you pass under a small flyover (the A3 subway).

At the end of the subway FORK RIGHT along Windmill Road. On reaching The Windmill GO STRAUGHT AHEAD THROUGH THE GREEN GATE . About 70 yards after the Windmill BEAR Left at the fork which takes you on to West Place. At the end of West Place cycle STRAIGHT AHEAD and it brings you back to Southside. The start/finish of the cycle ride.

You can get refreshments along the way at The Fox and Grapes on Camp Road and The Windmill in the park area. Cycle hire is available at various locations around the London area. Don’t forget to look out for ‘The Wombles’.
