Pentewan to Charlestown ‘The Pentewan Loop’

A 12 mile cycle route  Taking you from Pentewan along a traffic free trail up to Tregorrick

where the route then takes along country lanes and ‘B’ roads down to the historic port of Charlestown. The return journey takes you along quiet country roads back to Pentewan. Cycle hire is available in Pentewan from Pentewan Cycle Hire at the start of the trail and also Ocean Sports in the village. The route is along mixed surfaces trails and rods and is hilly in parts but nothing too difficult.

Starting from by the Ship Inn on West End in Pentewan cycle along West End away from the sea and cycle along the road for about 200 yards where you TURN RIGHT on to the Pentewan Trail which is situated by Pentewan Cycle Hire.
Cycle along the tree lined trail up towards Levalsa Meor. After about three quarters of a mile the trail is joined from the left by National Cycle Route No3 which comes up from
Mevagissey and from here the trail is part of the National Cycle Route No3.

Continue along the trail passing Levalsa Meor on the left and as you leave the King’s Wood you will see St Austell Golf Club on your left hand side as you cycle along. At the end of the golf course on the right hand side of the trail you will pass Molingey Pottery.

Just after the pottery the trail reaches Tregorrick Road which crosses the path of the trail.
TURN RIGHT along Tregorrick Road. Continue for three quarters of a mile to the end of
the road and at the end of the road TURN LEFT AND THEN IMMEDIATE RIGHT

downDuporth Road which takes you down past Duporth on your right and after half a mile you come to a ‘T’ junction when you enter Charlestown with Charlestown Road.

TURN RIGHT down Charlestown Road and cycle along the road for 200 yards to the quayside. Charlestown is a quaint historic port built in the late 18th century originally to transport ore from the local mines but soon became a port for china clay. Today its home to historic sqaure rigger ships and there are shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants for you to explore while at Charlestown.

Leaving Charlestown you return up along Charlestown Road and after 200 yards TURN LEFT along Duporth Road passing the small pond on the right. After 500 yards you come to a junction where you TURN LEFT up Porthpean Road. Cycle along the road passing Porthpean Golf Club on your left and after 1 mile you pass through the small hamlet of Lobb’s Shop where you go straight ahead at the small cross roads.

Continue along the road as you cycle for one and a quarter miles back down in to Pentewan. As you cycle in to Pentewan the road changes its name to Pentewan Hill and at the end of the road you TURN LEFT and cycle the short distance back to The Ship Inn. The start/finish of your cycle ride.

Pentewan was at one time a Cornish port with its small harbour dating back to medieval times and the small village was mentioned in The Domesday Book.
