Tenby Coast and Castle Tour

A 21 mile cycle route which takes you from the walled seaside town of Tenby with its wonderful beaches out through the Pembrokeshire countryside passing through local villages and then you return via the coast at Freshwater East and the village of Manorbier with its wonderful 11th century castle. The route is mainly along country lanes and ‘B’ roads with just a few short stretches on ‘A’ roads. The route is fairly flat and there are plenty of places for refreshments along the route. Tenby

Stating from The Esplanade on the sea front at Tenby. Cycle right along the Esplanade with the sea on your left hand side as you cycle along. At the end of the Esplanade follow the signs for National Cycle Route No4, which takes you along down the side of the car park and past Tenby Golf Club and parallel with the railway line.

Continue to cycle along National Cycle Route No 4 (follow signs) for 4 miles until you reach the village of St Florence. At the end of the lane at the centre of St. Florence you come to a ‘T’ junction. At the junction TURN LEFT and cycle along the lane following it round the left hand bend. About 100 yards after the bend BEAR RIGHT along Eastern Lane which takes you up hill out of the village and after 500 yards you come to a cross roads with The Ridgeway. TURN RIGHT on to The Ridgeway, cycling towards the village of Lamphey. Continue to cycle along The Ridgeway for two and a half miles until you come to the village of Lamphey where you come to a junction with The A4139. TURN LEFT at the junction along the A4139 which takes you through the centre of the village.

Cycle along the A4139 for about 100 yards then TURN RIGHT on to Lower Lamphey Road and THEN IMMEDIATE LEFT down Freshwater East Road. Cycle along the lane for about 1mile to Freshwater East.
At the centre of Freshwater East continue along the lane through Freshwater East (note: – if you want to visit the beach turn right in the centre of Freshwater East and the beach is on your left). About 500 yards past the centre of the village, just as you leave the village TURN LEFT up a lane and cycle for half a mile to Hodgeston.

At the centre of the small village of Hodgeston you come to a ‘T’ junction with the A4139. TURN RIGHT along the A4139. Cycle out of Hodgeston and after about three quarters of a mile TAKE THE SECOND TURNING FROM THE VILLAGE towards Manorbier.

Cycle along the lane for about three quarters of a mile where you come to small cross roads. TURN RIGHT at the junction and cycle down the lane which takes you half a mile down to the coast and up hill past the Norman Manorbier Castle which was built in the 11th century. About 100 yards past the castle you come to a ‘T’ junction. At the junction TURN RIGHT on to the B4585. Cycle along the B4585 for about three quarters of a mile where to come to a junction with the A4139. At the junction GO STRAIGHT ACROSS THE JUNCTION and cycle along the lane for three quarters of a mile where you come to a junction with The Ridgeway. At the junction TURN RIGHT along The Ridgeway and cycle along the road for about two and a half miles to Penally. As you enter Penally the road changes its name to Holloway Hill.

Manorbier Castle

At the end of the road BEAR LEFT and after 100 yards you TURN RIGHT back along the National Cycle Route No4 which takes you back to The Esplanade at Tenby. The Start/finish of your cycle ride.
