Ripon Loop – Via Fountains Abbey

A 9 mile¬†cycle route¬†taking you on a loop from Ripon Cathedral to the world famous Fountains Abbey and back to Ripon along mainly ‘B’ roads and country lanes. You will encounter some hills along the route. Cycle hire is available in Ripon from :- Moonglu, 57, Blossomgate, Ripon. The Cathedral city of Ripon is located on the River Ure and the River Lavern and is the fourth smallest city in England. A church has stood on the site of the cathedral since 672, and the crypt dates from this period.
Starting from Ripon Cathedral cycle left along Bedem Bank after a short distance take the third exit from the roundabout along Skellgarths B6265. After 200 yards TURN LEFT on to Low Skellgate (B) and cycle along the road as it runs in to Borrage Lane and alongside the river.

After about 500 yards the road bends sharply to the right and you come to a junction with Mallorie Park Drive B6265 (C). At the junction TURN LEFT and after 300 yards TURN LEFT along Studley Road B6265 (D). Studley Road takes you over the River Laver and continue to cycle along Studley Road for three quarters of a mile to the village of Studley Roger.

Continue along the road straight through the village and cycle up the hill for half a mile to the village of Royal. As you reach Royal you come to a small cross roads just by Studley Royal Garden Centre. At the crossroads GO STRAIGHT ACROSS THE JUNCTION and after 500 yards TURN LEFT along the tree lined country lane which takes you towards Fountains Abbey.
Fountains Abbey is a World Heritage Site and was founded in 1132. Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved Cistercian houses in England and is owned by the National Trust.

Cycle along the lane for 1 mile until you come to the end of the lane. As you cycle along this lane you are cycling past Studley Park and Fountains Abbey on your left. At the end of the lane TURN LEFT (F) and then LEFT AGAIN towards the Abbey and after 100 yards TURN RIGHT over the bridge across the river (G).

Cycle over the bridge and up the steep hill for 100 yards and then TURN LEFT down Fountains Lane (H). Continue along Fountains Lane through the hamlet of Fountains and then up the hill along How Hill Road.

About 300 yards after Fountains TURN LEFT up Whitcliffe Lane (I) and continue along the road towards Ripon. After about 3 miles you arrive back in the suburbs of Ripon and come to a ‘T’ junction (J). At the junction TURN LEFT along Harrogate Road and cycle along the road for a few hundred yards as it takes you over the river and to a junction with Low Skellgate (K).

TURN RIGHT at the junction and follow Skellgate back to Ripon Cathedral. The Start/Finish of your cycle ride.
