Skipton Circular to Yorkshire Dales

This cycle ride will take you from the market of Skipton (also known as the gateway to the dales) out into the Yorkshire Dales passing the Embsay to Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. Then through some of the dales via Halton East, Barden, Burnsall and Linton.

Approx 29 Miles. This ride is through the Yorkshire Dales, which is a collection of hills and valleys in the area. That means you will encounter hills and some severe climbs along the route. In parts this ride gets up to approx 600 ft above sea level and you are cycling out in rural countryside along ‘B’ roads all the way, so make sure you go on your ride prepared.

Canal at Skipton

Starting from the Royal Oak, Water Street, Skipton, BD23 1PB. Standing by the Royal Oak looking in the direction of the canal you should cycle to your left along Water Street for 100 yards and you will come to a junction with Raikes Rd. B6265. Turn left along Raikes Rd.
You now need to stay on the B6265. After about 200 yards the B6265 turns right onto Grassington Rd. Stay on the B6265 and follow it along Grassington Road. After a short distance you come to a round about on the A65. You should go straight across the round about keeping to the B6265.

After aprox 500 yards turn right onto Brackenley Lane which takes you past Skipton Golf Course and to the village of Embsay. Carry on until you reach the end of Brackenley Lane at Embsay and then turn left along Skipton Rd.

At the end of Skipton Rd., which is only a short distance turn right onto Shires Lane and follow this lane to the end, about 300 yards.

At the end of the lane turn right along Low Lane. You will now be cycling out in the countryside heading towards the village of Halton East. If you look to your right you will see the railway line for the Embsay to Bolton Abbey Steam railway. The steam railway has been a Heritage Railway since 1979 and was formerly part of The Midland Railway.

As you near Halton East village Low Lane meets with Holme Lane. Turn left along Holme lane and follow it through the centre of the village. As you start to leave the centre of the village there is a fork in the road, you need to take the right hand fork along Green Lane.
Continue to cycle along Green Lane past Hesketh Farm Park and after about 2 miles you come to Bolton Abbey where Green Lane comes to a junction with the B6160. Turn left along the B6160 heading in the direction of Barden.

You now cycle along the B6160 across Barden Moor for approx 11 miles passing Barden, Drebley and Burnsall on route.

After approx 11 miles you come to the outskirts of the village of Linton and a junction with the B6265.

Turn left onto the B6265and follow it through the village of Linton. You now follow the B6265which will take you all the back to Skipton and on the way you pass the villages of Threapland, Cracoe and Rylstone. After approx 8 miles you start to enter Skipton.

The return route through Skipton is the same as your previous outward bound route. Keep cycling along the B6265 until you reach the Mill Bridge over the canal and turn right along Water Street which takes you back to The Royal Oak.
